Safety Tips
Tune in to your local weather station and follow guidance provided in weather reports, watches and warnings.
Drink plenty of water, even if you are not thirsty. Avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks.
Wear lightweight, light-colored and loose-fitting clothes and UV-blocking sunglasses.
Use a wide-brimmed hat or umbrella for shade.
Avoid sunburn by covering as much skin as possible. Wear sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher. Do not leave sunscreen in your car as it can break down in extreme heat.
Limit time spent outdoors during the hottest part of the day (usually 12–5 PM). Plan outdoor activities for early morning or after dark.
Use air conditioners or fans. If using a fan, open windows.
Reduce heat in your home by covering windows with blinds, curtains or window film.
Avoid using the stove or oven when possible.
Take a cool bath or shower, or apply cold, wet cloths or ice packs to your head and neck.
If you do not have air conditioning at home, find a cooling center near you. Use Chesco Connect for transportation to a cooling place if needed.
Keep perishable foods chilled when eating outdoors, and do not leave them out for more than 2 hours — or 1 hour when it’s over 90⁰ F.
Check on your at-risk neighbors and family.
